TOP LOOKS FROM THE NEW HOUSE OF GUCCI MOVIE
Inspired by true events and based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed by Sara Gay Forden, the gripping story within the very house of the Gucci family gets the Hollywood treatment with renowned director Ridley Scott at the helm.
Lady Gaga stars as Patrizia Reggiani, ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who is portrayed by Adam Driver, and who was the heir to the fashion house founded by his grandfather Guccio Gucci. Also starring in the film are A-list Hollywood actors Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci who was the father of Maurizio, Al Pacino as Maurizio’s brother Aldo Gucci, Jared Leto as Aldo’s son Paulo Gucci, and Salma Hayek who plays Patrizia’s psychic Pina. House of Gucci brings Patrizia and Maurizio’s tumultuous marriage to the big screen from the early days of their relationship to its bitter, deadly end.
The history of Gucci is one steeped in high fashion and high drama. After tying the knot, not only did Maurizio and Patrizia have two daughters but they managed to win a highly contentious and publicized battle for control of the Gucci fashion empire. However, fifteen years into their marriage, Maurizio left for what he stated was a short business trip to Florence. It was only later than Patrizia was informed by Gucci’s family doctor that her husband had actually left her for his young mistress. Adding insult to injury, Maurizio sold the Gucci brand to outside investors.
As they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Patrizia is said to have been the mastermind who hired the hitman that fatally shot Maurizio in the foyer of his Milan office. Dubbed the Black Widow, while still maintaining her innocence to this day, Patrizia was sentenced to twenty-six years in prison. One could describe the film as The Godfather of fashion, with its mafia-like feuds and scheming. As one would expect, the sensational storyline is only matched by the characters’ sensational wardrobes.
The Italian luxury fashion house gave the film’s production crew access to the large Gucci fashion archives, including vintage bags and dresses, among others. While no longer tied to the Gucci family, the now Kering-owned Gucci fashion house granted Ridley Scott and his team creative freedom in portraying the members of the Gucci family. Set from the early 1970s until the 1990s, House of Gucci is taking place amidst the jet set lifestyle of the ’70s, the over the top fashion of the ’80s, and the sexy Tom Ford Gucci era that began in the ’90s.
Lady Gaga portrays Patrizia’s larger than life personality in flamboyant fashion and bold jewellery. Once described as the Milanese Elizabeth Taylor and called Lady Gucci, Patrizia was a frequent subject of Italian tabloids. Naturally, she was often seen donning Gucci clothing and accessories, as well as large sunglasses, fur coats, ostentatious dresses, and extravagant jewellery. Famously quoted saying, “I’d rather weep in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle”, her style echoed this unapologetic extravagance. The film is a visual delight with key fashion moments for the entire Gucci family, and some of the best fashion moments for Patrizia.
Lady Gaga herself gave the first sneak peek at Signore e Signora Gucci in contrasting coloured ski ensembles. With Maurizio in a cream knitted turtleneck and white trousers next to Patrizia in an all-black outfit accented by a large white fur hat and fully accessorized in pearls and gold jewellery, it was a taste of the fashions to come.

For the wedding ceremony of Maurizio and Patrizia, Lady Gaga is seen in a white lace gown featuring a sweetheart bust and illusion neckline. While not a replica of the actual wedding dress worn by Patrizia, it illustrates her less than subtle fashion sense. Also featured is a large bouquet of orchids. It’s been said that at her most extravagant, Patrizia would spend thousands of dollars on orchids alone.
Another top fashion moment is the all-white, all-lace summer dress with matching white lace cardigan worn by Patrizia. Far from being simple, the outfit is further accessorized with a black and gold belt, black snakeskin clutch, large pearl drop earrings, as well as a necklace and bracelet.
True to the outlandish fashion of the era, Patrizia in a pink and black polka dot dress complete with shoulder pads, a large gold chain necklace, multiple rings and gold necklaces, as well as a martini glass in hand, is the epitome of 80’s extravagance.
A don’t mess with me look, Patrizia means serious business in this blood red dress with large gold buttons. Worn with a fur coat, large all-black sunglasses, pearl drop earrings, a thick gold necklace, gold rings, and bracelets, Patrizia proves that more is more.
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but who says you can’t mix them with pearls? Another one of the show-stopping ensembles is the white, pearl-encrusted halter dress Lady Gaga as Patrizia wears along with layered diamond necklaces, earrings and rings. This is one of the looks that is, in fact, inspired by a dress worn by Patrizia herself.
A power couple during their heyday, Maurizio and Patrizia were well known for their parties and jet-set lifestyle. House of Gucci accurately portrays this with Lady Gaga in another replica of a silk evening dress featuring a deep v-neckline and bows on the shoulders, worn with black opera gloves and diamonds, that was once similarly worn by Patrizia.

Last but not least, for a woman who years later still describes herself as the most Gucci of them all, a fully monogrammed Gucci dress, mink fur coat and the quintessential Gucci Jackie handbag designed in the same monogram with the famous green and red Gucci stripes, are only fitting. Never do things halfway, a fur coat and gold jewellery complete the look.
From the high fashion and star-studded cast alone, House of Gucci is already a must-see movie.
