THANK GOD FOR PRE-LOVED: HOW THE HERMÈS BIRKIN GOT MORE (AND MORE) EXPENSIVE

THANK GOD FOR PRE-LOVED: HOW THE HERMÈS BIRKIN GOT MORE (AND MORE) EXPENSIVE

With new Birkins getting more expensive (and elusive) by the minute, pre-loved isn’t second-best. It’s the smarter, chicer choice.

It’s no secret the Hermès Birkin is one of the most sought-after bags in the world. Every year, like clockwork, Hermès raises prices - usually between 3-5% - blaming inflation, rising production costs, and other things even the more fashion-minded than financially minded among us can get behind.

But lately, these increases have stopped being polite. In just ten years, the price of a Birkin has jumped by 35%. Thank God for pre-loved.

Why Have Hermès Prices Gone Up?

From 2015 through the pandemic years, Birkin prices stayed fairly steady. Then, 2022 hit - and things shifted. In 2024, Hermès boutiques in the US added a neat $1,000 increase (almost 10%) on a Birkin 25. Just like that.

There’s also the looming threat of an additional 50% tariff which is on pause… for now. So, why the sudden jump? Well, luxury doesn’t need to be by the rules. Most things get less desirable when prices go up. Not the Birkin.

It’s like this: imagine a £2,000 sandwich. If more people are lining up for that than for the £2 one? You’d raise the price. And it would still sell out.

Now swap the sandwich for a Birkin. You get it.
