FASHION REWIND: CHANEL AUTUMN WINTER 2014
And what better place to start than with one of our absolute favourites of all time? Chanel Autumn/Winter 2014?
Chanel shows had always dipped into the art world, but this one went further: Karl Lagerfeld dragged the concept right into the supermarket aisles. The Grand Palais became a full-scale Chanel megastore, imagined entirely under the sign of the double C. It was witty, surreal, and detailed to the last Chanel-branded grocery item.
A reminder that this wasn’t just fashion, it was art, and it had something to say. The clothes themselves were just as playful: a mix of silhouettes, textures, and moods that swung from tweed coats to kaleidoscopic knits, styled with an casual ease. In other words, Lagerfeld at his sharpest, making it clear that Chanel wasn’t only about clothes, but about culture, satire, and spectacle. And the guest list? Peak 2014. (Hi, Rih Rih!)

The Set
The set looked like the fanciest supermarket to ever exist. Extraordinarily and painstakingly detailed, as Lagerfeld’s Chanel often was, there were more than a hundred thousand everyday items reimagined into the world of Chanel. The labels had been re-coded into Chanel-speak (Chanel-o!), there were chic black cotton buds sold as bâtonnets élégants, boxes of handkerchiefs labelled Les Chagrins de Gabrielle, house paint in a colour called Gris Jersey; detergent and potato chips, and best of all, a hardware department that featured a chainsaw with a real Chanel chain.

The Clothes
The clothes, the clothes, the clothes. Karl Lagerfeld the year previously had made trainers a talking point, and here he built the collection from the ground up on the footwear. The first outfit to hit the Chanel Fall Winter '14 runway had the makings of a Sunday-morning Waitrose run when you really need some eggs, sourdough and a pint of milk. And speaking of milk… Karl Lagerfeld enthused the bags with that same sense of humour that ran through the show, including an evening bag in the shape of a milk carton. This rare piece is now part of our collection at Rewind.

The Guest List
No Chanel show is complete without an audience worthy of the spectacle. The Autumn Winter '14 front row was a moment in itself: Rihanna, Keira Knightley, Anna Wintour and Cara Delevingne walked the show. It was 2014 distilled: bold, playful, and absolutely unforgettable.
