CHANEL PRICES HAVE RISEN (AGAIN)

CHANEL PRICES HAVE RISEN (AGAIN)

First it was Hermès. Now it’s Chanel. Let’s break it down…

Chanel quietly unveiled its new prices and it means all of our, and your, favourite bags are now (a lot) more expensive. So, what does this exactly mean?

Let’s break it down… Effective now, Classic Flaps and 2.55 models have gone up by around $500, translating to a 4-5% hike. Meanwhile, It-girl favourite Chanel 22 has climbed by 6-7%. Surprisingly, the Chanel 25 remains untouched… for now. Pre-loved Chanel has never looked better, has it?

Why Have Chanel Prices Increased?

This is the first U.S. price increase since March 2024, and it’s a part of a broader realignment after Chanel’s hold on bag prices earlier in the year. Though some expected Chanel to wait until its new Creative Director Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection, which is sure to get more eyes - and wallets - on Chanel, the brand appears to be aligning it’s pricing with long-term brand positioning and exclusivity. Sounds a lot like the Hermès business model.

We’ll Always Have Vintage

And thank God. With new Chanel bags getting more expensive by the minute, pre-loved isn’t second-best. It’s the smarter, chicer choice. For one, Chanel Classic Flap prices soar and make excellent investment pieces. A bag that cost $1,200 in the ‘90s would sell for $7,000 now, second-hand.

The Chanel Boy Bag also holds steady, retaining 70-85% of its value.

The Future Of Vintage

While timeless silhouettes from Chanel boast enduring appeal, there’s also an appetite for bags that have “future” vintage potential - think, Chanel’’s 19 and 25 bags. The 25 is already commanding steep resale premiums, while the 22 offers a slightly softer entry point with compelling style and value. Of course, it will be decades before collectors settle on what truly defines vintage versus merely pre-loved - and which of today's buzziest shapes will endure as tomorrow's icons. We’ll be sure to break it to you, though.
