A CHANEL IT- BAG INDEX
From decadent costume jewellery worn by Coco Chanel herself, to the theatrical runways of Karl Lagerfeld's vision, the brand has always been interwoven with magic.
Karl Lagerfeld is infamous for translating the elaborate fairytales of each of his Chanel collections into the designs of the handbags accompanying the season. Most often found in minaudière (hard-case clutch) form, these limited edition pieces become highly rare and sought after collectibles.
With a wink of playfulness, Lagerfeld often transforms the ordinary into luxury prizes, each finished with a Chanel monogram. At Rewind, we have the notorious milk carton handbag from Chanel’s trip to the supermarket, and a see-through gas canister from the "Dubai by Night" Metiers D’Arts collection. Or else, a music vinyl-shaped clutch, or hyper rare editions of the No.5 bottle in minaudière form.
The It-bags to buy for next season are two hard clutches from the feminist collection of spring/summer 2015. With everyone from Prabal Gurung, and Marie Grazia Chiuri at Dior, celebrating female empowerment through slogans for autumn/winter 2017, it’s the perfect time for a clutch reading, “Ladies first” or “Je ne suis pas en solde (I am not for sale)”.
Other collectible Chanel handbags are striking in their subtlety. At Rewind, we’ve just received a glimmering minaudiere encrusted with crystals and faint illustrations of stars. Or for a more off-duty vibe, a slouchy shoulder bag trimmed with chain fringe.
