All good Hermes followers and fans from over the years will know that it was Jane Birkin, London-born singer, actress and fashion icon, who inspired the design ideas and gave the name to their infamous Birkin Bag. And if you didn't know this? Well, you've just learnt your new thing for today!
In the early 80's (1981), Hermes' chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Birkin on a flight to London. Birkin was carrying a straw bag, which, in an attempt to put it in the overhead compartment of her seat, fell to the ground, spilling all the contents on the plane floor. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked, not realizing who he was.
Soon after, in 1984, a bag was created, not only for her, but named after her. And still, over 25 years later, we are in love with it's supple leather and its variety of hides, sizes and colours!
We have one in stock, and you know you don't want to miss out!
