England's capital city has officially claimed the top spot as 2011 fashion capital of the world, overtaking New York, which had been number one for several years!

The award to London was based on a survey by Global Language Monitor that tracks the frequency of words and phrases in print, electronic and social media. The rise in media interest was stimulated by the tragic suicide of British designer Alexander McQueen earlier this year and the Duchess of Cambridge's stylish wedding, turning her into a global fashion icon. She even wore McQueen on her recent visit to visit the scenes of the Birmingham riots!

"We are seeing what the impact of two genuine media stars can have upon a global ranking. Our numbers show that it was their presence that tipped the victory to London over New York,'' says Bekka Payack, of Global Language Monitor.

Following London and New York were Paris, Milan, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, while Berlin and Singapore managed to break into the top 10 for the first time since the survey began eight years ago.

But can we keep it up, Londoners? Well, with London Fashion Week, Vogue Fashion's Night Out, Carnaby Catwalk, and the arrival of the new Westfield st Stratford, we reckon the topic of fashion will still be talked about for a while!
